Some Terminology
al·ter - changed in order to improve or made more fit for a particular purpose
re·cy·cle - to recondition and adapt to a new use or function
up·cy·cle - the using of waste materials to provide useful products
rec·re·ate - to impart fresh life to; refresh
tra·shion - a term for fashion created from used, found or thrown-out elements

So, the Peñasco Runway Project is called Altered Ropa.
It is going to be a fun summer project.
You can see the preliminary page explaining the contest at:
http://mexiconaomi.blogspot.mx/p/penasco.html
But I thought I would post some of the things that I've
discovered on the internet while researching this project.

Our contest will be judged on two basic elements:

1.
One is the originality of the item -
how uniquely the designer was able to transform the previous item(s)
into an interesting and stylish new creation.

2.
The other element is the wearability of the final garment.
Which means, we are not going for the outlandish . . . not in this contest.
Rather, we are looking for a designed garment which can actually be worn
in the real world!

Some of the crazy photos that I am including here
are super cool and really totally unique - however, not for the real world.
So let's look at some of my "finds"!
"The good the bad and the ugly", as they say:

OK. . .  So this is Interesting. Definitely Unique.
Certainly, it is a real "recycle" project.
However, it is not what we are going for in this contest.

This is a PERFECT example of the kind of transformation we will be looking for!
Taking a boring old item. . .
And re-creating it into a completely wearable item of clothing.

However, this is not super unique. It is rather conservative.
Yet, it is a good example showing the Before and After of the project.

Here is a project that I did
Also, showing the "Before" items and the "After" which is a flamenco dress.

Adding embellishments can be a great way to Up-Cycle an outfit.
Here is one that is much more wearable:

Altered & Transformed

"OOPS!" (again)

As is often the case with my projects, I forgot to take a "before" picture.

However, I went online and found some skirts similar to the one that would be
the "base" for this particular project.

So I was given a skirt - which was a tan shade -
and yet very similar to one of these:
You get the idea . . .  a crocheted skirt.

So Donna (the skirt's owner) also gave me:
  • a chocolate brown leather skirt
  • an ivory blouse with a starfish and fish to use
  • some earrings with little fish on them

I added a few more items from my stash:
  • an embroidered dark brown tank top
  • a camisole top with a pretty, flowy bodice
  • some chocolate brown heavy lace edging
  • a length of authentic fishing net
  • a chocolate brown lace top

This was a really fun project. I wanted the final dress to be
slightly bohemian with a hint of the ocean...

Here are the results:

(NOTE: My living room isn't usually full of boxes of seashells,
but I am working on another project . . .  so there you go.)

LIFE: A work in progress!

SLIGHTLY BLURRED Close up
Above you can see the part of the earrings that
I took apart to use on the top, there are also small fish
as you can see in the close up below.
Also notice the bits of silk & chocolate leather strewn across
the bodice and a bit of beadwork.

The original skirt had enough fabric to make two layers of
crocheted loveliness on the new dress!
The white is from the camisole bodice which was cut apart.

Here you see the leather rose that I made and if you look closely,
you will notice the authentic fish net hanging from the waist along with pieces
from the chocolate brown, lace top which I used for the sleeves on the new dress.
The long sleeves cuffs were finished with "leftover" fabric from the tank top,
some lace and the crocheted skirt.

So there you have it!
That is my latest Altered Project!

Donna came to get her dress today
and I think she was happy with it!

ANOTHER FUN PROJECT!

The Story of Funky Nancy

Posted by Unknown Kamis, 26 Januari 2012 0 komentar

Allow me to introduce Nancy:

So this is my new mannequin for displaying jewelry and hats or whatever.  I had an idea that I needed something like this. And I searched online and found quite a few choices that I could buy. But then I was out making some copies here at a local office supply store and I saw this white styrofoam mannequin.  I purchased it and brought it home - not quite sure what I would do to make her a little more interesting.

Then, I thought of my old pattern box.....

There was plenty of tissue paper here for some paper mache work.
So, I had my idea. I had also bought some white school glue.
Russ found me a plastic tub and I watered down the glue and started to work.

The supplies.

Covering the poor girl in glue and paper....
A little afternoon sun to help her dry out.

She is gonna need quite a few layers, I think.
Just a little macabre, actually.....
She looks pretty funky if you ask me....
Her back view.

Then, I had to find her a name....
So, I searched for a song or quote that seemed to fit her personality.
I found it!
A song called Strange Kind of Woman by the band Funky Junction.

"There once was a woman
A strange kind of woman
The kind that gets written down in history
Her name was Nancy
Her face was nothing fancy
She left a trail of happiness and misery."

(Just right, don't you think?)

So, here is a quick comparison - A Before and After.

I've found some interesting tissue paper and a few more "busts" and soon
Funky Nancy will have some friends.  These are great displays.
And, dressed up they have quite the individual character!

Check out Funky Nancy on Etsy:

zoom
She is Funky and Eclectic. And, so stoic in her pose.
A styrofoam base that has been decoupaged (paper mache) with old patterns.
She is life size. So, she is sized just right for your hats and jewelry displays.
You can see how I used her in several of my photos.

This was my slightly scientific experiment!
I absolutely love her - so I have a few more ladies "waiting in the wings" to be transformed!
Love the Vogue pattern pieces and other specialty touches.
A band around her neck says "Guide for Neck Trim".
$40.00 plus shipping.

I also discovered that there are several other people
who have made their own version of a "Funky Whoever".

Assemblage: The Latest Trend in Jewelry

Posted by Unknown Jumat, 30 Desember 2011 0 komentar
"ASSEMBLAGE JEWELRY"
WHATEVER DOES THAT MEAN? YOU ASK.
Well, before I show you my latest "Fascination"... Look at the excerpt from this article:

Following excerpt (by Valli Herman) can be found at: www.thestyleglossy.com
Worn in multiples and combined in eccentric, slightly kooky combinations, today’s jewelry makes its statement with size, color and audacity - not price.
Many collections feature a strong vintage feel. Now is the time to reassess that pile of forgotten chains, bangles or rhinestones. Trends include cascades of pearls mixed with matte metal chains; rhinestones partnered with ribbon; and rosettes that anchor asymmetrical assemblages of beads, chains, leather & fabric.
Metals don’t aspire to be "precious" - they’re content to look like they belong in a hardware store. A recession-inspired return to less-precious materials, coupled with a new consciousness about sustainability, has helped inspire a creative renaissance in fashion jewelry.
The trend is good news for all of us who have despaired that our jewelry is a hodgepodge of different styles, materials and decades. Matching is out, mixing is in. Now is the time to flaunt your personal style, says Ken Downing (Neiman Marcus). “You can combine bracelets and bangles that feel as if they have been collected not only from various places on a journey, but also from various times.”
That intricate necklace of mirrors, medallions and bells you bought in India (or the neighborhood thrift shop) is now the height of fashion. Forget restraint: Big necklaces can complement earrings the size of a corsage. Or copy the baroque approach of designer John Galliano of Christian Dior and pile on a bib necklace of gold medallions. . .
Colleen Sherin (Saks Fifth Avenue) advocates mixing layers of chains and not worrying about everything coordinating perfectly. “An off-kilter, eclectic look is really on trend,” she said.

OK. So that goes along just SPLENDIDLY with this project!
Here is the shoebox of "mom's" costume jewelry.
My "task" was to come up with 7 different assemblage pieces.
The finished pieces would be given to daughters -in-law & grand daughters.
Isn't that a sweet idea? . .  . I loved it!

So, each piece would include parts of several necklaces
along with earrings & brooches which would compliment each one.
So, here are my creations:
3 necklace strands & a few assorted earrings on the shoulder.

3 great necklace strands, grape earrings, bird earrings and an oriental pin for balance.

A Classic beauty! 5 strands and a fantastic brooch for the focus!

Necklaces & chains, a funky brooch and several earrings.

OOH-la-la! Crazy silver strands, rhinestones, the other grape earring & MAS!

3 more great necklace strands with seashell earrings. Love it!

Crazy black & whites strung together with red earrings as a Focus!

SO, THERE THEY ARE....
I now have another project using a combination of jewelry,
seashells and sea glass pieces!
Like I always say, "Beachy!"

And, here is my creation using MY old & abandoned jewelry.
I tried to sell it for awhile...but... NO! can't do it.

And, here is a great one that I would like to use for Inspiration:
Check out all of  her creations at:
